Our square baskets are made from ilala palm leaves. These are found in the Lupane area naturally but the Lupane Women's Development Trust also has a plantation of ilala palms that they maintain in order to make sure that they don't run out of the raw materials needed for their basket work.
The cream and brown baskets are made with natural and dyed ilala palm leaves. The chocolate strips are dyed with a natural dye made from the root of the umunyi tree also known as berchemia discolor or bird plum.
These baskets are approximately 8 to 9 cm square and 3 to 4 cm deep. They do vary slightly due to the handmade nature of basket weaving.
