Ndoro Necklace in Sterling Silver
Our Ndoro necklace is hand-made in Zimbabwe from recycled sterling silver.
Our Ndoro design is a highly stylized version of the original Ndoro that was used for trade in ancient Africa. The Ndoro design we have created is hand-engraved, one little dot at a time. Due to the fact that it is hand-engraved, every single one of our Ndoro pendants is quite unique, just like the Ndoros that inspired this design.
The original Ndoros were in fact shells that were introduced as a form of currency when the Portugues began trading with the Great Zimbabwean Empire between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries in what is now the modern State of Zimbabwe. As the popularity of this form of currency increased the Portuguese traders started to make them from ceramic which probably made them a lot more uniform than the original shells.
The Ndoro pendant is made in sterling silver and is 15 mm by 15 mm. We have hung it on a 60cm sterling silver chain.
We carefully wrap each necklace in hessian and place that little parcel in our mini sisal and ilala palm baskets. It does come with a gift tag with space for you to write a message. Our hope is that if you are giving this as a gift you will not have to wrap it in additional paper and save a few trees. :) Our packaging is recyclable and can be composted.
